The landmark redevelopment of Centenary Square, in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre, was presented with the prestigious Project of the Year award at the West Midlands Property Awards on 7th November 2019.
The project won the hotly contested category, with over six other shortlisted prestigious West Midlands projects. Acivico provided project management, quantity surveying and clerk of works services to the contract.
Chris Hall, Deputy CEO at Acivico said, ‘Acivico are delighted the project has been awarded this highly sought after accolade. We are very proud to have been part of such a prestigious city centre development, which is providing exceptional amenities for both the local and wider communities. The project has transformed the heart of Birmingham and created an iconic public space the city can be proud of. We know this space will be enjoyed by residents and visitors to the city for many, many years to come.”
Centenary Square, completed in July 2019, creates a dynamic and inspiring city square in central Birmingham and a venue for its cultural, civic and leisure events, currently hosting the ‘big wheel’ and festive outdoor ice skating rink.
Centenary Square’s redevelopment also and acts as new ‘gateway’ to many of Birmingham’s major high profile venues such as the Birmingham Symphony Hall and International Conference Centre, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Birmingham Library.
The Square’s design incorporates a variety of soft and hard landscapes. These include groves of more than 50 Maple, Gingko, Cherry, Birch and Acer Rubrums trees. A large ‘Reflecting Pool’ water feature doubles as a large events space when drained and is complemented with 43 x 25metre-high lighting columns, delivering visually impressive illumination to the space. The design of these landscapes creates intimate areas within the overall square, appealing to visitors from all of Birmingham’s diverse community.
During construction, some 6 million people passed through the site unhindered and access was maintained 24/7 to adjoining venues.
Centenary Square adds to Acivico’s portfolio of high profile projects. Recently commenced Acivico projects include the £11.8m Saltley Academy and £14m Rockwood Academy, Birmingham.
